The outer dense fibers are cytoskeletal structures that surround the axoneme in the middle piece and principal piece of the sperm tail. The fibers function in maintaining the elastic structure and recoil of the sperm tail as well as in protecting the tail from shear forces during epididymal transport and ejaculation. Defects in the outer dense fibers lead to abnormal sperm morphology and infertility. The human outer dense fibers contains at least 10 major proteins and this gene encodes the main protein. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Gene Symbol : ODF1
Gene Name : Outer dense fiber of sperm tails 1
Chromosome : CHR 8: 102,551,619-102,561,016
Locus : 8q22.3
This gene encodes a progestin-induced protein, which belongs to the HECT (homology to E6-AP carboxyl terminus) family. The HECT family proteins function as E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases, targeting specific proteins for ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. This gene is localized to chromosome 8q22 which is disrupted in a variety of cancers. This gene potentially has a role in regulation of cell proliferation or differentiation. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Gene Symbol : UBR5
Gene Name : Ubiquitin protein ligase E3 component n-recognin 5
Chromosome : CHR 8: 102,412,718-102,252,272
Locus : 8q22.3
