This region represents a cluster of enhancers located approximately 100 kb downstream of the PAX6 (paired box 6) gene. It includes multiple highly conserved regions and DNase I hypersensitive sites. One of these conserved regions, called SIMO, includes a binding site for the Pax6 protein and is important for establishing an autoregulatory feedback loop for PAX6 expression. Deletion, mutation, or chromosomal rearrangement of this region can phenocopy mutation in the PAX6 gene and result in aniridia. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2016]
